Lily’s respiratory condition, real or imagined, requires her to constantly wear an oxygen mask—a habit she’s used to garner attention and sympathy. She manipulates her illness to get closer to her step-parent, using phrases like “I feel better when you’re around” or “You’re the only one who makes me breathe easier.” She insists on sharing a room—and eventually a bed—under the pretense of needing care or protection.
